Südsteirische Weinstraße – hiking in Austria’s most beautiful wine region

From an international perspective, Austria is probably less known for good wine. However, Sven & I are absolute fans of this area, as well as of the cuisine and the white wine from this region 😍

I even dare to say that it is my favorite region in Austria. There is nothing better than wandering through the vineyards for hours and taking short breaks for a snack or a wine tasting at the local winegrowers 😋

The most important thing on this holiday is of course nature and cuisine, but it can’t hurt to spend your stay in a beautiful accommodation where you can really indulge yourself after hours of hiking. We have already stayed twice at Gut Pössnitzberg and can absolutely recommend this hotel. It has a small wellness area as well as an outdoor pool and offers free wine tasting every day.

Our absolute highlight was the restaurant Kreuzwirt at Gut Pössnitzberg. The best thing about it … after hours of dining and tasting wine, you only have to fall over twice and you have already arrived in your room and can sleep through until you get a delicious breakfast in the morning 🤣

Best travel time:

Our favorite time to visit this region is September through mid-October. This time offers the perfect climate for hiking, and nature plays all sorts of colors at this time. In general, however, the period from June to October can be recommended.

More tips & recommendations:

We are happy to recommend the “Glanzer Hoftour” hike. This is 23 km long (walking time approx. 6 hours), but can be divided into 2 stages. There are plenty of places to stop for a break, but you should find out in advance which wine tavern is open on which day. If you spend the night at Gut Pössnitzberg, you can start hiking straight away, as the accommodation is right on the hiking trail. We still recommend using the hiking app “Outdooractive”, as we had already got lost twice on this tour 🙈 You can find more information about this route in the following link:
