Panorama Trail Saalachtaler Höhenweg

We have had the opportunity to explore the holiday region of Saalfelden Leogang a number of times. Winter sports enthusiasts are attracted by 270 kilometers of downhill runs and 70 state-of-the-art cable cars and lifts, and in summer you will find Austria’s largest bike region here. However, a completely different highlight lures us to this area… the Saalachtaler Höhenweg 😍

In our opinion, the Saalachtaler Höhenweg is one of the most beautiful high-altitude hikes with an impressive view of the Salzburg mountains. It is divided into 2 sections, East and West. Although it is a hike of several hours, the trail is classified as a relatively easy hike due to the low altitude difference.

SAALACHTALER HÖHENWEG WEST (Nr. 771)

Distance: 19.2 km

Duration: approx. 6 hours

Ascent: 349 hm

Descent: 1,268 hm

The starting point is the Leoganger Astizbahn, parking spaces are available at the valley station. The hike begins at the mountain station of the Asitzbahn. From the mountain station in a westerly direction to the small Asitz and on to the large Asitz. From here continue in a westerly direction via the Schönleitenhütte and the Seidlalm to the Barnkogel. Then via the Spielbergtörl to the Spielbergalmen. The last stage leads back into the valley to the Knappenstube “Unterberghaus” in the Leoganger Schwarzleotal.

SAALACHTALER HÖHENWEG OST (Nr. 773)

The starting point here is also the Leoganger Astizbahn. From the mountain station, continue in a westerly direction to the small Asitz and on to the large Asitz. Then continue in a south-easterly direction to the Geierkogel, Lochalmköpfl and Durchenkopf (here you have the poosibility to descend to Leogang) and continue via the Weikersbachköpfl and thepaulerbachhöhe to the Biberg mountain inn.

From the Biberg mountain inn, it then goes down a wide forest path to the Huggenberg mountain inn, from where you can take the summer toboggan for the last section of the descent.

We can absolutely recommend the following 2 hotels. Our highlight at the Hotel Krallerhof was the gourmet menu in the evening, but the Naturhotel Forsthofgut impresses with a sensational wellness area including an organic bathing lake.
