Luzern – a jewel on Lake Lucerne

Our 3rd wedding anniversary was just around the corner. Of course, this had to be celebrated in a special place. So we decided to go on a weekend trip to Lucerne. Kayla was of course allowed to accompany us 😉

For this occasion, we booked a suite in the Art Deco Hotel Montana with a jacuzzi on the terrace and a fantastic view of Lake Lucerne 😍

The hotel turned out to be very dog friendly. A quiet table in the restaurant was immediately reserved for us, as it was assumed that we would take our four-legged friend with us. We are actually more used to the fact that dogs are not allowed in the hotel restaurant …

In the hotel restaurant Scala we celebrated our 3rd wedding anniversary with a delicious 6-course menu.

After such an extensive dinner we urgently had to stretch our legs. We walked a bit along the lake and let the city work on us.

Unfortunately, the next day the weather thwarted our plans. It was quite cloudy and inconsistent in the morning, so our planned 4-lake hike in the Titlis area unfortunately fell into the water.

We quickly rescheduled and decided on an extended city walk in Lucerne.

At noon the sun even came out and the temperatures climbed to 30 degrees. Since Kayla was absolutely exhausted after our 3-hour tour through the city and she cannot take the heat well 🙄 we decided to bring her to our room for a few hours to rest.

We treated ourselves with a quick lunch at the Seecafe with a fantastic view of the lake.

Then we headed for the Lucerne seaside resort. It was just a few minutes’ walk from the hotel.

We rarely last longer than 2-3 hours to lie around and do nothing. Besides, we didn’t want to leave Kayla alone in the hotel room for too long. So we decided to go on a little trip with her.

Our Kayla is actually not a fan of cool water at all, and yet we owners often think we know better 🤣

We discovered a dog-free zone with access to the lake, which was only a 30-minute walk from the hotel.

Kayla first had to deal with such a diverse and successful day. So Kayla wasn’t angry at all when we left her in the room that evening while Sven and I had a few drinks at the Montana Beach Club 😋

Fortunately, the weather on the day of departure was relatively consistent. So we decided to finish with the Rigi Panoramarundweg (more information on this can be found below in the tips and recommendations).

Our personal opinion about Lucerne:

  • fantastic panorama
  • Lucerne is diverse (city, lake, mountains)
  • a very dog friendly city

On the following page you can get a very good overview of Lucerne:

Best travel time:

Lucerne is a great travel destination all year round. The summer months are best for swimming. In spring and autumn, the surrounding mountains invite you to go hiking.

Hotel recommendation:

Art Deco Hotel Montana

Absolutely dog-friendly hotel, dogs are even allowed in the restaurant. Surcharge: CHF 20 per night without food

The only drawback … to find a bit of “green” for day-to-day business, you have to walk a long way. It is best to go down on the lake promenade (there are also dog waste bags available there).

Restaurant recommendations:

  • Mekong (in Hotel Astoria, Asian Bistro, Bar & Restaurant)
  • Scala Restaurant (in Hotel Art Deco Montana)
  • Montana Beach Club (Cocktails with view in Hotel Art Deco Montana)
  • Seecafe (in Grand Casino for lunch)

More tips & recommendations:

A city walk through Lucerne: The Musegg wall with the Musegg towers is a landmark of the city of Lucerne, from here you have the best view of the city.

On hot summer days, you can swim in Lake Lucerne. We can absolutely recommend the seaside resort in Lucerne (day admission CHF 6). However, Lucerne offers plenty of green spaces next to the lake. You can always find a nice spot somewhere.

Dog free zone: On Churchill-Quai, between Lido and Hotel Seeburg, there is a dog free zone with a dog bathing area.

Panoramic hike on the Rigi: We parked directly at the Seebodenalp car park. From here you have various options (1-5 hours of hiking)

Up to the Pilatus – a unique experience. Unfortunately, we weren’t lucky with the weather and will have to make up for this trip.
