Yucatán – ¡Bienvenido a México!

Dream beaches, Maya temples, nachos and tequila … we have been looking forward to that and much more for weeks. Well not quite, I gave up tequila years ago 🤪

After a 12 hour flight, we were welcomed to the Sandos Playacar Beach Resort with a welcome drink. Our accommodation was in Playa del Carmen, a holiday resort on the Mexican Caribbean coast, the so-called Riviera Maya, on the Yucatán peninsula. We decided on Playa del Carmen because Cancun seemed a bit too hectic to us.

The hotel beach was just breathtakingly beautiful. Anyone who prefers the pool on such a beautiful beach is absolutely beyond help.

Fajitas, nachos and margaritas were compensated by daily training in the gym or by Zumba on the beach 💪😉

The town of Playa del Carmen can be reached by a 45-minute walk on the beach. When we made our first attempt, we were forced to turn back halfway. Within minutes there was a doom and gloom and we just wanted to get to safety 😬

The next day we tried our luck again. The pedestrian street Quinta Avenida runs parallel to the beach and offers a variety of shops, restaurants and nightlife options from cool bars to dance clubs.

What would Mexico be without its Mayan ruins. Chichén Itzá is probably the best-preserved Mayan ruins in Yucatán, and it is certainly the most visited. We went on a guided day trip to Chichén Itzá.

The excursion also included a stop in Valladolid, a friendly colonial town and a swim in a cenote. The Maya considered the cenotes a sacred site. Sven’s basic instinct came out – he couldn’t stop himself and had to play Tarzan 😉

From a culinary point of view, we lacked nothing. As big fans of Mexican cuisine, we didn’t expect anything else 😊

Mexico is a country that is still on my bucket list. We only discovered a small part of Mexico with our visit to the Yucatán Peninsula. Baja California, Mérida, Mexico City & Palenque are just a few more highlights that I would like to explore. That’s why I say ¡Hasta luego!

Our personal opinion about Yucatán:

  • stunning Caribbean beaches
  • very interesting historical background – Mayan ruins
  • suitable for both… relaxing holidays and round trips

Best travel time:

We recommend the months December to April. The main rainy season in Mexico is between May and November, and June to November is also hurricane season.
