Seealpsee – picturesque mountain lake in the Alpstein region

The Seealpsee is probably one of the most popular excursion destinations in the Appenzellerland. Even though we were out in the off-season, we were still surprised by the completely overcrowded parking lot in Wasserauen. This is the starting point for exploring the Alpstein region. However, we quickly noticed that the crowds were well distributed and were therefore able to enjoy nature completely undisturbed 😍

Behind the Hotel Alpenrose in Wasserauen a relatively steep asphalt path starts to the idyllically embedded Seealpsee. The mountain lake at an altitude of 1143 meters can be reached on foot in less than an hour.

When you arrive at the lake, you can rent rowing boats, fish, visit an alpine cheese dairy or simply enjoy the impressive Appenzell mountains including a view of the Säntis. Two restaurants are available for a little refreshment.

The lake can be walked around in about half an hour. Afterwards you have the option to either hike back on the same path or via the slightly longer path over the Hüttentobel/Klein-Hütten to Wasserauen.

Walking time: approx. 2.5 hours (7 km)
