Prague was never very high on my bucket list, but we had to go to a business meeting in the Czech capital and used the opportunity for two days of sightseeing. I quickly realized that I had completely underestimated this city – that was definitely not just due to the specialties of the Bohemian cuisine and the Czech beer 😉
It was January and the thermostat showed MINUS 10 degrees 🥶 not necessarily the best conditions for a city weekend. On the other hand, perhaps this is precisely why this historic city, with its snowy winter landscape, spreads so much charm.
One of the highlights is definitely the Charles Bridge over the Vltava, which connects the old town with the Lesser Town. The coronation route of the Bohemian kings used to lead over this bridge. Today it is considered a landmark of the city of Prague.
The Old Town Square is the center of Prague’s Old Town. Another main attraction is located here – the town hall with the astronomical clock.
You can hardly avoid this highlight – the Prague castle complex on the Hradschin can be seen from afar.
It used to be the seat of Bohemian emperors, kings and dukes … today it is the residence of the President of the Czech Republic.
The best view of the city of Prague is clearly from the PetÅ™Ãn. It is a 318 m high hill on which there is a 63 m high observation tower, which is a bit reminiscent of the Paris Eiffel Tower.
You can get to the observation tower either by funicular or by a 20-minute walk. In order to warm up a bit when the temperature was below zero, we decided to go up on foot.
You can only really experience Prague if you have also tried the Bohemian cuisine and a wide variety of beers. At this cold time of the year we didn’t have a guilty conscience and we really enjoyed the hearty goulash and the dumplings 😋 In Prague you actually get something for your money – at least that was the case in 2014 😉 We also found the somewhat Spartan restaurants to be very charming.
Prague’s nightlife is also impressive. We’re not the absolut party bunnies… but we don’t like to say no to a few good drinks in a nice bar 😉

With full bellies and thanks to delicious cocktails and slightly wobbly on our legs, we strolled through the streets of the city one last time. We will definitely be back, but probably at a warmer time of the year 😉
Our personal opinion about Prague:
- beautiful old town
- hearty but very tasty cuisine
- a city with a lot of history
Best travel time:
We personally prefer spring and autumn. However, Prague is beautiful at any time of the year.
